Community Success: New Steps and Entrance Repairs at Cleversburg Sink
The Cleversburg Sink entrance just got a major upgrade! What started as a necessary environmental maintenance project turned into an inspiring display of teamwork between the Franklin County Grotto and the broader caving community.
Improving Access and Stability
The hillside leading down to the Cleversburg Sink entrance has always been a challenge to navigate safely without impacting the terrain. This project focused on two main goals:
-
Creating a Safer Descent: We replaced old, decaying railroad ties to rebuild the stepped path leading down the hillside. These steps provide cavers with stable footing, reducing the risk of slips and protecting the slope from erosion caused by foot traffic.
-
Entrance Restoration: Beyond the stairs, we performed critical repairs to the entrance area to ensure it remains secure and well-maintained for future trips.
A Multi-Grotto Effort
One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was the turnout. We weren't just joined by Franklin County Grotto members; several other independent cavers and members from neighboring grottos stepped up to help.
In total, a crew of 12 volunteers converged on the site. With so many hands on deck to haul heavy ties and move earth, we managed to beat the clock and finish the entire project ahead of schedule.
"When the caving community comes together like this, we ensure that our local caves remain accessible and preserved for years to come."
